despotic
Ruling with total power in a cruel, unfair way.
Despotic means ruling with absolute power in a cruel and unfair way. A despotic leader makes all the decisions alone, ignores what people want or need, and often punishes anyone who disagrees. Think of a classroom where one student somehow gained complete control and started making harsh rules that only benefited them: no one else gets a turn, everyone must do what they say, and anyone who objects gets excluded from games. That's despotic behavior on a small scale.
Throughout history, despotic rulers have caused tremendous suffering. A despot is a ruler who governs despotically, controlling everything through fear rather than earning respect or listening to others. Some governments are described as despotic when one person or group holds power for a long time, allows no freedom of speech, no real elections, and harshly punishes people who disobey.
You might also hear despotic used to describe anyone who acts like a tyrant in a smaller setting, like a despotic coach who humiliates players or a despotic boss who fires people for tiny mistakes. The word captures both the absolute control and the cruelty that comes with it.
