dialogue
A conversation where people talk and listen to each other.
Dialogue is a conversation between two or more people, especially in a book, play, or movie. When characters in a story speak to each other, that's dialogue. Good writers use dialogue to reveal what characters think and feel and to show their relationships and personalities. In Charlotte's Web, the conversations between Wilbur and Charlotte are dialogue that shows their growing friendship.
The word also describes serious discussions between groups trying to solve problems together. When school administrators meet with students to discuss new lunch policies, they're having a dialogue. When countries negotiate to avoid conflict, they engage in dialogue. This kind of dialogue requires both sides to listen carefully and speak honestly, exchanging ideas and considering each other's viewpoints.
Notice that dialogue is different from a monologue, where one person speaks alone, or a debate, where people try to win an argument. Real dialogue happens when people genuinely try to understand each other's perspectives. A teacher might encourage dialogue in class discussions, hoping students will share ideas and build on what others say rather than just stating their opinions.
