A dietitian is a trained professional who helps people understand how food affects their health and creates eating plans tailored to individual needs. Dietitians work in hospitals, schools, sports teams, and private practices, using scientific knowledge about nutrition to guide their recommendations.
Unlike someone who just offers casual food advice, a dietitian has completed years of college education and passed rigorous exams to earn credentials. They study how different nutrients work in the body, how certain foods can help manage diseases like diabetes, and how to create balanced meals that give people the energy and nutrients they need.
You might meet a dietitian if you have food allergies and need help planning safe, nutritious meals. Athletes work with dietitians to fuel their training and competition. Hospitals employ dietitians to design meal plans for patients recovering from surgery or managing chronic conditions. A dietitian might help a growing kid ensure they're getting enough calcium for strong bones, or help someone with celiac disease learn which foods to avoid.
Note that dietitian and nutritionist aren't quite the same: dietitian is a protected title requiring specific education and certification, while nutritionist can sometimes be used more loosely.
