diorama
A small 3D scene in a box that shows something.
A diorama is a three-dimensional miniature scene, usually displayed inside a box or case, that recreates a moment in time or shows how something looks in real life. Museums often use dioramas to show historical events, like pioneers crossing the prairie, or natural habitats, like a wolf pack in a snowy forest. The figures, plants, and backgrounds are carefully crafted and arranged to look as realistic as possible.
Many students create dioramas for school projects: you might build a scene from a book you read, using a shoebox as your stage, modeling clay for characters, and construction paper for scenery. The goal is to bring a story or concept to life in a way that viewers can see from the outside looking in.
Creating a diorama requires thinking about perspective, scale, and detail. Every element needs to work together: if you're showing the ocean floor, your fish should be the right size compared to the coral, and the lighting should feel underwater. A well-made diorama can transport viewers to another place or time, all within a space small enough to fit on a shelf.
