disclaimer
A statement that explains or limits responsibility or promises.
A disclaimer is a statement that protects someone from responsibility or clears up what they are and aren't promising. Think of it as an official “heads up” that sets boundaries or warns people about limitations.
You see disclaimers everywhere once you start noticing them. Before a movie shows a stunt, a disclaimer might say “Don't try this at home.” A book based on real events might include a disclaimer explaining that some details were changed or imagined. When someone shares advice online, they might add a disclaimer like “I'm not a doctor” to make clear they're just sharing their own experience, not professional medical guidance.
Companies use disclaimers to explain what their products can and can't do. A video game might include a disclaimer that “actual gameplay may differ from this trailer.” A contest might include a disclaimer that “odds of winning depend on the number of entries.”
A disclaimer protects both the person making it (by managing expectations) and the person reading it (by providing honest information upfront).
Sometimes people use disclaimers to be extra careful, like starting a presentation with “Disclaimer: I'm still learning about this topic.” It's a way of being upfront and honest about limitations from the very beginning.
