discuss
To talk carefully about something and share different ideas.
To discuss means to talk about something with others, examining different aspects, sharing ideas, and considering various viewpoints. When your class discusses a book, students don't just say whether they liked it: they talk about the characters' motivations, debate what the author meant, and listen to each other's interpretations.
Discussion involves more than casual chat. If you mention to a friend that you watched a movie last night, that's conversation. If you and your friend talk through what made the movie's ending surprising, compare it to the book version, and wonder about the director's choices, that's discussion. You're going deeper, exploring the subject from different angles.
Teachers often say “discuss your answer with a partner” because explaining your thinking to someone else helps you understand it better. When you discuss something, you might change your mind based on what others say, or you might strengthen your original view by defending it. Scientists discuss their research findings with colleagues. Families discuss important decisions together. Friends discuss which game to play, weighing everyone's preferences.
Good discussion requires listening as much as talking, being willing to consider ideas different from your own, and staying focused on understanding the subject rather than just winning an argument.
