discussion
A talk where people share and listen to ideas.
When people have a discussion, they talk together about a topic, sharing their thoughts and listening to what others think. Unlike a lecture where one person does all the talking, or an argument where people just try to prove they're right, a discussion involves back and forth conversation where everyone contributes.
You might have a discussion in class about a book you've read, with students sharing different interpretations of what happened and why characters made certain choices. At the dinner table, your family might have a discussion about where to go on vacation, with each person explaining what kind of trip sounds appealing and why.
Good discussions require both speaking and listening. When you're in a discussion, you offer your ideas clearly, but you also pay attention to what others say and consider their perspectives. Sometimes discussions help a group reach a decision together, like choosing a theme for a school dance. Other times, discussions simply help people understand a topic more deeply by hearing different viewpoints.
A class discussion is when the whole class talks through ideas together rather than just taking notes.
