Disjointed means disconnected or poorly organized, like puzzle pieces that don't fit together properly. When something is disjointed, its parts don't flow smoothly from one to the next.

A disjointed story jumps around confusingly, making it hard to follow what's happening. Imagine reading a book where Chapter 3 seems to have nothing to do with Chapter 2, and characters appear without introduction. That's disjointed writing. A disjointed conversation skips randomly between topics: one moment you're discussing your favorite video game, the next someone's talking about their uncle's garden, then suddenly you're back to games but a completely different one.

The word can describe physical things too. A disjointed robot moves with jerky, unconnected motions instead of smooth coordination. Disjointed movements look awkward and unnatural, like a marionette with tangled strings.

The opposite of disjointed is cohesive or smoothly connected. When you write an essay or tell a story, you want each part to connect logically to what came before. Good organization prevents your work from becoming disjointed. If a teacher says your presentation felt disjointed, they mean your ideas didn't connect clearly, even if each individual point was good on its own.
