divinity
The state of being like a god or from God.
Divinity is the quality of being divine, meaning godlike or coming from God. When people talk about the divinity of Jesus in Christianity, they mean his nature as God. When ancient Greeks spoke of Zeus's divinity, they meant his power and nature as a god.
The word also refers to the study of religion and God, which is why some universities have divinity schools where students prepare to become ministers, priests, or religious scholars. Someone studying divinity might explore questions like: What does it mean to be good? How should people treat each other? What happens after death?
Interestingly, divinity is also a sweet, fluffy white candy made from whipped egg whites and sugar, often with nuts mixed in. This candy got its name because it tastes so delicious that people joked it must have come from heaven.
When you encounter divinity in your reading, context will tell you which meaning fits. In a book about mythology or religion, it refers to gods or the divine. In a college catalog, it means religious study. And at your grandmother's house during the holidays, it might just mean that heavenly candy.
