dodgeball
A fast-paced game where players throw and dodge balls.
Dodgeball is a fast-paced gym class game where two teams throw rubber balls at each other, trying to hit opponents while avoiding being hit themselves. When a ball strikes you, you're out and must leave the playing area. The last team with players remaining wins.
The basic strategy involves both offense and defense: throwing accurately to eliminate opponents while dodging, catching, or deflecting incoming throws. If you catch a ball before it touches the ground, the thrower is out and one of your eliminated teammates can return to the game. This catching rule adds an exciting risk-reward element, since attempting a catch means you can't dodge away.
Dodgeball has been played in American schools since at least the 1940s and remains popular despite occasional controversy. Some physical education teachers love it for building hand-eye coordination, quick reflexes, and teamwork. Critics argue it can feel aggressive or allow stronger students to dominate weaker ones. Many schools have modified the rules to make the game friendlier, such as using softer foam balls instead of rubber ones, creating “no headshot” rules, or designing variations where eliminated players can earn their way back in through side challenges.
