doll
A toy person, usually shaped like a baby or child.
A doll is a toy shaped like a human being, usually a baby or child. Dolls have been around for thousands of years, made from whatever materials people had available: ancient children played with dolls carved from wood or shaped from clay, while modern dolls might be made from plastic, cloth, or porcelain.
Some dolls are simple and soft, perfect for cuddling. Others have joints that move, eyes that open and close, or elaborate outfits. Collectors prize certain dolls for their craftsmanship or historical value, like antique porcelain dolls or limited-edition collectibles. Many children use dolls for imaginative play, creating stories and taking care of their dolls like parents caring for children.
The word doll can also mean a kind or helpful person, usually said affectionately: “Thanks for helping me carry all these books. You're a doll!” This usage is somewhat old-fashioned but still heard occasionally.
People sometimes call miniature versions of things dollhouse versions, like dollhouse furniture or dollhouse-sized portions, meaning tiny versions scaled down to fit a dollhouse where dolls might live.
