domicile
A person’s official, permanent home where they legally live.
A domicile is your permanent home, the place where you legally live and plan to return to even if you travel elsewhere. It's your official, legal residence, the address that determines where you vote and pay taxes.
Think of it this way: a college student might live in a dorm during the school year, but their domicile is still their family's home in their hometown. A diplomat working in another country for three years maintains their domicile in their home country. Your domicile is your anchor, your home base, the place you consider your real home even when you're away.
The word matters most in legal situations. Your domicile determines which state's laws apply to you, where you vote, and where you pay certain taxes. If someone asks for your domicile, they're asking where you officially and permanently live, your established home rather than a temporary location.
You might also hear domiciliary, which describes things relating to someone's domicile, like domiciliary care for someone who receives medical help at home.
