doorman
A person who helps people at a building’s entrance.
A doorman is a person employed by a hotel or apartment building to stand near the entrance and help people coming and going. When you arrive at a fancy hotel, the doorman might open the door for you with a smile, help unload your luggage from the taxi, or hail a cab when you're ready to leave. In luxury apartment buildings, doormen greet residents, accept packages, and keep track of who enters the building for security.
The job involves personal service and attention to detail. A good doorman remembers residents' names, notices when something seems unusual, and creates a welcoming atmosphere. In cities like New York, doormen have become iconic figures: uniformed, professional, and often knowing more about the neighborhood than anyone else. They might help an elderly resident carry groceries, keep an eye on children playing outside, or simply offer a friendly “good morning” that makes people feel at home.
Today, automatic doors have made the physical task less important, but doormen continue to work in upscale buildings where personal service and security matter most.
