dreadlocks
A hairstyle with long, rope-like strands of tangled hair.
Dreadlocks are a hairstyle where hair is intentionally formed into rope-like strands, or locks. Instead of combing hair smooth, the hair tangles and knots together over time, creating thick, cord-like sections. The process can happen on its own if hair isn't brushed, or people can encourage it by twisting, braiding, or using special techniques.
Dreadlocks have deep cultural and religious significance in many traditions around the world. Rastafarians wear dreadlocks as an expression of their faith, inspired by biblical passages. In ancient Egypt, mummies have been discovered with dreadlocks. Hindu ascetics in India have worn their hair in locked strands for thousands of years. Warriors in various African cultures grew dreadlocks as symbols of strength.
Today, people of many backgrounds wear dreadlocks for different reasons: some for spiritual or cultural connection, others simply because they like how the style looks or feels. The hairstyle works naturally with certain hair textures but can be created with any type of hair. Dreadlocks can take months or even years to fully form and mature, requiring patience and care to maintain. Some people keep their locks for decades, while others eventually cut them off for a fresh start.
