dressmaker
A person who sews custom dresses and other clothing.
A dressmaker is a person who sews custom clothing, especially dresses and other garments for women. Unlike buying clothes off the rack at a store, a dressmaker creates pieces tailored specifically to fit one person's body and style preferences.
For most of human history, nearly all clothing was made by dressmakers, tailors, and seamstresses. If you wanted a new dress in the 1800s, you'd visit a dressmaker who would measure you carefully, help you choose fabric, and sew the garment by hand to fit you perfectly. A skilled dressmaker could transform bolts of cloth into beautiful gowns, everyday dresses, or even elaborate costumes.
The invention of the sewing machine in the mid-1800s made dressmaking much faster, and eventually factories began mass-producing affordable clothing in standard sizes. Today, most people buy ready-made clothes, but dressmakers still create custom pieces for special occasions like weddings, proms, and theatrical performances. They also alter existing clothes to fit better or repair damaged garments.
A good dressmaker needs both artistic vision and technical skill: they must understand how fabric drapes and moves, how to read or create patterns, and how to operate a sewing machine with precision.
