drop-down
A menu that appears with choices when you click something.
A drop-down menu is a list of options that appears when you click or tap on a button or box on a computer screen or phone. The list literally drops down (or sometimes pops up) from where you clicked, showing choices you can select from.
You see drop-downs constantly when using computers. When filling out a form online, you might click a box that says “Select your state” and a list of all 50 states drops down for you to choose from. In a word processor, clicking the font name reveals a drop-down list of different fonts. Video games use drop-down menus to let you adjust settings like difficulty level or sound volume.
The design is practical: instead of cluttering the screen with every possible option all the time, a drop-down menu keeps choices hidden until you need them. It's like having a toolbox where the tools stay neatly tucked away until you open the lid. Once you make your selection, the menu disappears again, keeping your workspace clean and organized. This simple design has become so common that you probably use dozens of drop-down menus every day without even thinking about it.
