A drum major is the leader of a marching band who stands at the front, often on a raised platform, conducting and directing the musicians as they perform. While the band members play their instruments and march in formation, the drum major uses a baton and precise hand signals to keep everyone playing at the right tempo and moving together.

The drum major has to know the music inside and out, because they're responsible for starting the band, signaling tempo changes, and bringing everything to a clean finish. They also lead the band onto the field or down the parade route, sometimes performing elaborate high-stepping marches or tossing their baton. At football halftime shows or holiday parades, the drum major is usually the most visible person, wearing a distinctive uniform that might include a tall hat or special sash.

Being selected as drum major is a significant honor. It requires strong musical knowledge, leadership skills, and the ability to command attention from dozens of musicians at once. The position demands someone who can stay calm under pressure, since a mistake by the drum major can throw off the entire band. In this way, a drum major is like the captain of a sports team: they set the standard and everyone else follows their lead.
