duet
A performance or piece of music for exactly two people.
A duet is a musical performance by exactly two people, or a piece of music written for two performers. When two singers share a microphone to perform a song together, they're singing a duet. When a pianist and violinist perform a composition written for their two instruments, they're playing a duet.
In a good duet, both performers are equally important. Neither one is just background support; they're partners, weaving their voices or instruments together to create something richer than either could make alone.
You'll find duets everywhere in music. In musical theater, characters often sing duets to show their relationship, whether they're friends, rivals, or family. Classical composers write duets for combinations like two flutes, piano and cello, or voice and guitar. Even in pop music, when two artists collaborate on a song, it's called a duet.
The word can stretch beyond music too. You might hear someone describe two comedians working together as a comedy duet, or say that two figure skaters moving in perfect synchronization are skating a duet. The core idea stays the same: two performers, one unified performance.
