eastern
Located in or coming from the east.
Eastern means located in, coming from, or related to the east. If you look at a map of the United States, the eastern states like New York, Virginia, and Maine are on the right side, closest to the Atlantic Ocean. The Eastern Hemisphere includes Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia.
The word often describes cultures, traditions, or ideas from Asia. Eastern philosophy refers to ways of thinking developed in places like China, India, and Japan. Eastern medicine includes practices like acupuncture and herbal remedies that originated in Asia. When someone talks about traveling to Eastern Europe, they mean countries like Poland, Romania, or the Czech Republic.
In nature, we use it for direction and geography: the eastern sky is where the sun rises each morning, and eastern winds blow from the east. A bird flying on the eastern flyway migrates along the Atlantic coast.
The opposite of eastern is western. Notice how the word changes meaning depending on context: the eastern United States means something different from Eastern philosophy, even though both refer to “east” in their own way.
