edition
A particular version of something that is printed or released.
An edition is a particular version of something that's published or released, especially books, newspapers, or products. When a publisher prints a book, that's the first edition. If they print it again with corrections or updates, that's a second edition. Collectors prize first editions of famous books like The Hobbit or Charlotte's Web because they're the original printings.
Newspapers use editions differently: the morning edition and evening edition of the same paper might have different headlines if news breaks during the day. A newspaper might also print a special edition to cover a major event like a championship game or an election.
The word also describes special versions of things. A limited edition sneaker or toy means only a certain number were made, making them more valuable or collectible. Video games often come in a deluxe edition with extra features or content beyond the standard version.
When you see “revised edition” or “updated edition” on a textbook, it means the authors fixed errors or added new information since the last edition. Different editions of the same book might have different covers, introductions, or even slightly different text, but they tell the same basic story or contain the same core information.
