encouragement
Support that helps someone feel brave and confident.
Encouragement is the act of giving someone support, confidence, or hope, especially when they're facing something difficult or doubting themselves. When a coach offers encouragement to a nervous player before the big game, she's helping that player believe in their own abilities. When your parent gives you encouragement before a challenging test, they're not doing the work for you, but they're helping you face it with confidence.
Encouragement can come in many forms: words of support (“You can do this!”), a pat on the back, a smile at just the right moment, or simply believing in someone when they're struggling to believe in themselves. Sometimes the most powerful encouragement is just showing up: when your friend comes to watch your piano recital, their presence alone encourages you.
Think about a time when you almost gave up on something hard, but someone said the right thing at the right time, and suddenly you felt ready to try again. That's encouragement. It doesn't ignore real challenges or pretend everything is easy, but it reminds people they're capable of more than they think. A teacher who offers encouragement to a struggling student isn't lowering standards, but helping that student reach higher.
