endearment
A loving nickname or word that shows you care about someone.
An endearment is a word or phrase that shows affection or fondness for someone. When your grandmother calls you “sweetie” or “honey,” she's using an endearment. Parents might call their children “buddy,” “sunshine,” or “pumpkin.” Friends sometimes use endearments like “pal” or “champ” with each other.
These special words express warmth and closeness. They're different from someone's actual name because they carry extra feeling with them. When you hear an endearment, you know the person cares about you.
Different cultures and families have their own favorite endearments. Some are common, like “dear” or “sweetheart.” Others are unique to particular families: maybe your uncle always calls you “sport,” or your best friend has a special nickname just for you. Endearments can sound a bit silly to outsiders, but that's part of what makes them special. They're little verbal hugs, ways of saying “you matter to me” without making a big speech about it.
Notice that tone matters: the same word can be an endearment or teasing depending on how it's said. When used genuinely, endearments create moments of connection and tenderness in everyday conversation.
