endlessly
In a way that seems to go on forever without stopping.
Endlessly means without stopping or finishing, going on and on with no end in sight. When something happens endlessly, it continues so long that it feels like it might never stop.
A rainy afternoon might seem to stretch endlessly when you're stuck inside wishing you could go out and play. Ocean waves roll endlessly toward the shore, one after another, hour after hour, year after year. A student might complain that their little brother talks endlessly about his favorite video game, never pausing to discuss anything else.
The word captures that feeling of something continuing far beyond what seems reasonable or comfortable. When a teacher lectures endlessly, students start fidgeting and checking the clock. When someone scrolls endlessly through videos on their phone, they look up and discover an hour has vanished.
Sometimes endlessly describes something genuinely infinite, like how the universe stretches endlessly in all directions. But often it's an exaggeration expressing frustration or exhaustion: “We hiked endlessly up that mountain” really means the hike felt extremely long, even if it eventually ended. The word suggests not just duration, but a test of patience.
