engaged
Actively involved and paying close attention to something.
Engaged means actively involved and focused on something, giving it your full attention and energy. When you're engaged in a science experiment, you're genuinely interested, asking questions, and thinking carefully about what's happening. An engaged reader pictures the scenes, wonders what will happen next, and cares about the characters.
Teachers love to see engaged students because engagement shows you're really learning, not just sitting there. During a class discussion, an engaged student listens carefully to others' ideas, thinks about what they mean, and contributes their own thoughts. The opposite of engaged is distracted or checked out.
The word also describes someone who has formally agreed to get married. When two people get engaged, they promise to marry each other and usually wear special rings to show this commitment. You might hear someone say, “My aunt just got engaged!”
Whether it's being engaged in a challenging puzzle, engaged in a conversation with a friend, or engaged in a new hobby, the word suggests you're participating actively and meaningfully, not just passively present.
