An engineer is someone who uses science, mathematics, and creativity to design and build things that solve problems or make life better. Engineers apply their understanding of how things work to figure out how to make new things work, or how to improve what already exists.

There are many types of engineers. Civil engineers design bridges, roads, and buildings. Mechanical engineers create machines, from tiny watch gears to enormous construction equipment. Electrical engineers work with circuits, computers, and power systems. Chemical engineers develop new materials and medicines. Aerospace engineers design aircraft and spacecraft.

What makes someone an engineer is being a creative problem-solver who asks, “How can we make this better?” or “What if we tried this approach?” When a bridge needs to cross a wide river, when a city needs clean water, or when a phone needs to fit more technology in less space, engineers figure out solutions.

The word can also be a verb. To engineer something means to skillfully plan and create it. A student might engineer an elaborate marble run, or a coach might engineer a comeback victory by designing clever new plays. Whether designing a skyscraper or crafting a winning strategy, engineering means using your mind to build something that works.
