entrance
A place where you go in, like a door or opening.
The word entrance has two meanings:
- A place where you go in. The entrance to a building is where you walk through the door. A cave might have a narrow entrance between two rocks. Schools often have a main entrance where everyone arrives in the morning, and sometimes side entrances for different parts of the building. The entrance to a maze is where you start your journey through it.
- To fill someone with wonder or delight so completely that they seem almost frozen in place. A beautiful sunset might entrance you, holding your attention so fully that you forget everything else. A magician's trick can entrance an audience, leaving them staring in amazement. When you're entranced by something, you're captivated by it, lost in the moment. You might become entranced by a piece of music, a story, or watching snow fall silently outside your window. Being entranced feels different from just paying attention: it's that special feeling when something beautiful or fascinating holds you, completely spellbound.
