enumerate
To list things one by one, carefully and completely.
To enumerate means to list things one by one, counting or naming each item carefully and completely. When a teacher asks you to enumerate the planets in our solar system, she wants you to name them individually: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, and so on. When a scientist enumerates the steps in an experiment, he's making sure each step is clearly identified in order.
It suggests a thorough, organized approach to listing. You're methodically going through all of them, making sure each item is accounted for. A detective might enumerate the clues in a mystery, making sure nothing gets overlooked. A baker might enumerate the ingredients needed for a recipe.
Enumerate is similar to “list” but sounds more formal and systematic. You might list your favorite foods, but you would enumerate the constitutional amendments or the causes of the American Revolution. The word appears often in academic writing and careful, detailed explanations where completeness matters. When someone enumerates something, they're taking the time to make sure every item gets counted and nothing important gets left out.
