equalize
To make things fair, balanced, or the same level.
To equalize means to make things equal or balanced. When a soccer team equalizes, they score a goal that ties the game after being behind. When you adjust the volume on different speakers to equalize the sound, you're making sure no single speaker is too loud or too quiet compared to the others.
The word often appears when someone is trying to fix an imbalance. A teacher might equalize opportunities by giving every student the same amount of time to present their project. In a game where one player starts with an advantage, you might add a rule to equalize things and make the competition fair.
An equalizer can be a person or thing that creates balance. In sports, an equalizer is a goal or point that ties the score. In audio equipment, an equalizer (often shortened to “EQ”) lets you adjust different sound frequencies to get the mix you want.
Equalizing doesn't always mean making things identical. Sometimes it means adjusting for differences to create fairness. When a board game gives younger players extra points to equalize their chances against older players, it's recognizing that true fairness might require different treatment, not identical treatment.
