equation
A math statement showing two sides are equal using =.
An equation is a mathematical statement that shows two things are equal, connected by an equals sign. When you write 3 + 4 = 7, you've written an equation: the value on the left side equals the value on the right side.
Equations become especially powerful when they include unknowns, usually represented by letters like x or y. The equation 2x + 5 = 13 asks: what number, when doubled and increased by 5, equals 13? Solving it means figuring out that x must be 4. Scientists use equations to describe how the universe works, from Isaac Newton's equations of motion to Albert Einstein's famous E = mc², which shows the relationship between energy and mass.
Outside mathematics, people use equation to mean the important factors in a situation. A coach might say “Speed is only part of the equation” when explaining that winning also requires teamwork and strategy. When your parents consider whether to let you get a pet, they're thinking about the whole equation: your responsibility, the cost, the time commitment, and the space available.
