era
A long time period with its own special events or style.
An era is a long period of time marked by distinctive characteristics, events, or ways of life. When historians talk about the Victorian era, they mean the decades when Queen Victoria ruled Britain (1837-1901), a time known for its particular styles, inventions, and social customs. The Mesozoic era refers to the age of dinosaurs, spanning millions of years.
What makes something an era rather than just any stretch of time? An era has a clear identity. The Renaissance era wasn't just 200 years in Europe: it was a time when art, science, and learning flourished in distinctive ways. When someone says “that was a different era,” they're emphasizing how much things have changed.
You can use era for shorter periods too. A baseball team might talk about “the championship era” when they won multiple titles, or a school might remember “the era before computers,” when students typed papers on typewriters.
