essay
A short piece of writing that explains or explores an idea.
An essay is a short piece of writing that explores a specific topic or question. When you write an essay for school, you're sharing your thoughts, explaining an idea, or making an argument about something. Essays can be serious, like analyzing a book or explaining how photosynthesis works, or personal, like describing a memorable summer vacation.
The word comes from a French term meaning “to try” or “to attempt,” which captures something important: an essay is your attempt to work through ideas on paper. You're not expected to know everything perfectly. Instead, you're thinking carefully about a subject, organizing your thoughts, and presenting them clearly.
Essays typically have a clear structure. You introduce your main idea, develop it with examples and explanations in the middle paragraphs, and wrap up with a conclusion. A good essay doesn't just list facts. It shows how you think about those facts and what conclusions you draw from them.
Writers also use the word as a verb. You might essay a difficult task, meaning you attempt it even though it's challenging. This older usage shows up in phrases like “I'll essay to climb that tree,” though most people today would just say “I'll try.”
