exhibition
A public display of things for people to look at.
An exhibition is a public display of objects, artwork, or information organized for people to view and learn from. Museums hold exhibitions of ancient artifacts, famous paintings, or scientific discoveries. A science fair is an exhibition where students display their experiments and projects. Art galleries mount exhibitions of a sculptor's work or a photographer's collection.
The word emphasizes the intentional arrangement and presentation. When you exhibit something, you carefully organize it so others can appreciate and understand it. A natural history museum might create an exhibition about dinosaurs, with fossils arranged in glass cases, informational panels explaining what scientists have learned, and perhaps life-size models to help visitors imagine these ancient creatures.
Schools often hold exhibitions of student work, displaying writing, artwork, or science projects so families and other students can see what everyone has accomplished. Major exhibitions draw visitors from around the world: think of a traveling exhibition of treasures from an Egyptian pharaoh's tomb, or a collection of Impressionist paintings visiting from France.
Exhibition can also describe a skillful demonstration, as when a gymnast performs a beautiful exhibition of her talents at a meet, or a chess master gives an exhibition match where she plays multiple opponents simultaneously.
