existing
Already real or present, not just imagined or future.
Existing means being real or actually present, rather than imaginary or merely possible. When scientists discover a new species of butterfly in the rainforest, they've found something that was already existing there, living and thriving before anyone knew about it.
The word describes things that are here, now, in reality. Your existing friends are the ones you actually have, not the ones you might make someday. A school's existing playground equipment is what's already installed and ready to use, different from the new swings they're planning to add next year.
You might hear adults talk about existing laws or existing conditions. They mean the rules or situations that are already in place right now. When a city council debates a new park, they have to work with the existing budget (the money they actually have) rather than money they hope to raise later.
Existing helps us distinguish between what's real and what's possible, between what's already here and what might come later. When you hear someone say “under existing circumstances,” they're talking about dealing with things as they actually are, not as we wish they were.
