A chess expert understands strategy, recognizes patterns, and can think many moves ahead. A medical expert has spent years learning about the human body and treating patients. An expert baker knows how humidity affects dough and why certain techniques work better than others.

Becoming an expert takes time and dedication. Someone might practice piano for an hour after school and be pretty good, but a piano expert has likely practiced thousands of hours over many years. Experts often see things others miss because they've encountered so many situations in their field.

The word can also describe someone's skill level: an expert skier, an expert carpenter, an expert chess player. When people face difficult problems, they often seek out experts for help.
