extent
How much or how far something goes or reaches.
Extent means how far something reaches or spreads, or how much of something there is. When your teacher asks about the extent of your knowledge of fractions, she wants to know how much you understand: just the basics, or can you tackle complicated problems too? When scientists measure the extent of a forest fire, they're determining how many acres it covers.
The word helps us describe size, reach, or degree. You might say “I didn't realize the extent of the problem” when you discover something is bigger or more serious than you first thought. A detective investigating a mystery needs to understand the full extent of the crime. After a big storm, people assess the extent of the damage to see which houses, roads, or trees were affected.
Extent often appears in phrases like “to a certain extent” (meaning partly but not completely) or “to what extent” (asking how much). If your friend asks “To what extent do you like soccer?” they're really asking whether you're casually interested or completely obsessed with the sport.
