extracurricular
Happening outside regular school classes, like clubs or sports.
Extracurricular describes activities that happen outside of regular classroom learning. The word comes from “extra,” meaning beyond, and “curricular,” referring to the curriculum or course of study. So extracurricular activities are the things you do at school beyond math, science, and English classes.
These might include sports teams like soccer or track, clubs like robotics or debate, student government, school plays, band, or chess club. Some students join extracurricular activities because they love the activity itself. Others join to make friends, learn new skills, or challenge themselves in ways that regular classes don't offer.
The word can also describe activities completely outside of school. If you take piano lessons on Saturdays or play in a youth soccer league, those are extracurricular too. They're “extra” because they happen in addition to your regular school schedule.
Colleges and employers often ask about extracurricular activities because they show how you spend your free time and what interests you pursue when nobody's making you. A student who throws themselves into theater productions or practices the violin for hours demonstrates dedication and passion.
