fair
Treating people equally and justly, without cheating or favoritism.
The word fair has several meanings:
- Treating people equally and justly, without favoritism. A fair teacher grades all students by the same standards. A fair referee calls the game the same way for both teams. When you divide the last cookie so everyone gets an equal piece, you're being fair. The opposite of fair in this sense is unfair or biased.
- Moderate or adequate, neither excellent nor poor. If someone asks how your soccer game went and you say it was fair, you mean it was okay but nothing special. A fair amount of something means a reasonable quantity, not too much or too little.
- Light in color, especially describing hair or skin. Someone with fair hair has blonde or light-colored hair. Fair skin means pale or light-toned skin that sunburns easily.
- A public event with rides, games, food stands, and entertainment. The county fair or state fair might include a Ferris wheel, livestock competitions, and funnel cakes. These events often celebrate agriculture or local community.
- Clear and pleasant weather. Fair skies mean sunny conditions without storms. Sailors talk about fair winds that help them reach their destination.
