faithful
Staying loyal and keeping your promises over time.
Faithful means staying loyal and true to someone or something, especially over time and through difficulties. A faithful friend doesn't abandon you when things get hard or when other kids make fun of you. A faithful dog waits by the door every day for its owner to come home.
Being faithful means keeping your commitments and promises. When you're faithful to a team, you show up to practices even when you'd rather do something else. When someone is faithful to their word, they do what they said they would do.
The word also describes accuracy and closeness to an original. A faithful retelling of a story includes all the important details without changing them. A faithful reproduction of a painting captures the colors and details of the original. In this sense, faithful means true to the source, not adding or leaving out important things.
Religious people use this word to describe their relationship with their beliefs: the faithful are those who actively practice their religion. Someone might be described as a faithful member of their church, synagogue, or mosque.
Notice that faithfulness requires action over time. Anyone can be loyal for a day, but being faithful means staying committed for weeks, months, or years, even when it's inconvenient or challenging.
