Fanciness is the quality of being elaborate, decorative, or more dressed up than ordinary. A restaurant with chandeliers, cloth napkins, and waiters in bow ties has a level of fanciness you won't find at a burger joint. A wedding cake covered in sugar flowers and gold leaf has much more fanciness than a simple sheet cake.

The word describes when something goes beyond plain or practical to become more ornate or elegant. Your everyday sneakers are fine for school, but dress shoes have the fanciness needed for a formal event. A basic pencil works perfectly well, but a fountain pen has a certain fanciness to it.
