feet
The plural of foot, the body part you stand on.
The word feet has two main meanings:
- The plural of foot, the body part at the end of your leg that you stand and walk on. Your feet carry your weight all day, help you balance, and let you run, jump, and dance. Each foot has five toes, an arch in the middle, and a heel at the back. Most people have two feet, though some people are born with different numbers or lose a foot due to injury or illness.
- A unit of measurement equal to twelve inches, used mainly in the United States. A football field is 300 feet long. Your bedroom might be 10 feet wide. When you measure your height, you might say you're 4 feet tall or 5 feet tall.
You can also use the word figuratively. When you get your feet wet, you're trying something new for the first time. When you stand on your own two feet, you're being independent and self-reliant.
