ferret
A small, playful pet animal with a long, slender body.
A ferret is a small, playful mammal with a long, slender body, short legs, and an energetic personality. Ferrets have been domesticated for thousands of years and are related to weasels, otters, and badgers. People keep them as pets because they're curious, intelligent, and love to explore every corner of a house, often getting into mischief by stealing small objects and hiding them.
Ferrets sleep a lot (up to 18 hours a day!) but when awake, they're incredibly active and playful. They have a distinctive way of moving called the weasel war dance, where they hop sideways and arch their backs when they're excited or playing. Pet ferrets need lots of attention and a safe space to run around, since they love tunneling through tubes and investigating anything new.
The word can also be used as a verb meaning to search persistently for something, often in a determined or sneaky way. If you ferret out information, you dig around until you find it, like a detective tracking down clues. A journalist might ferret out the truth about a story, or you might ferret through your backpack while looking for a missing pencil.
