fiesta
A lively party or festival with music, dancing, and food.
A fiesta is a lively celebration or festival, especially one with music, dancing, food, and colorful decorations. The word comes from Spanish, where it simply means “party” or “feast,” and it carries the feeling of joyful, energetic celebration.
In many Spanish-speaking countries and communities, fiestas mark important occasions: religious holidays, harvests, or local traditions. A town might hold a fiesta that lasts several days, with parades, traditional dances, special foods, and everyone dressed in festive clothing. These are exuberant gatherings where whole communities come together.
You might hear someone say “Let's have a fiesta!” to suggest throwing a particularly fun party. The word suggests something spirited and festive: imagine bright papel picado (decorative cut paper) hanging overhead, mariachi music playing, and tables loaded with tamales and fresh fruit.
In the American Southwest, where Spanish and Mexican culture have deep roots, fiestas are common community celebrations. San Antonio's Fiesta celebration, for example, has been held every spring since 1891, filling the city with parades, music, and food for over a week.
