fine
Very good or of high quality.
The word fine has several related meanings:
- Something of high quality or excellence. A fine painting shows skill and beauty. A fine piece of furniture is well-crafted and elegant. When someone does fine work, they've paid attention to detail and done their best. Musicians practice for years to develop fine technique.
- Very thin or made up of tiny particles. Fine sand feels smooth because its grains are so small. A spider spins fine silk threads almost invisible to the eye. Fine print means text so small it's hard to read (often containing important details people miss). A fine line is barely visible.
- Acceptable or satisfactory, though not necessarily great. When someone asks how you're doing and you say “I'm fine,” you mean you're okay. If your teacher says your essay is fine, it meets the basic requirements but isn't outstanding. This meaning can sound a bit lukewarm.
- A punishment requiring payment of money. If you return a library book late, you might have to pay a fine. Parking in the wrong spot could result in a fine from the city. The amount you pay is also called a fine: “The fine was twenty dollars.”
The phrase fine by me means you agree or don't object to something. When things are going well, people might say everything is fine and dandy.
