fix
To repair something that is broken or not working.
The word fix has several meanings:
- To repair something that's broken. When you fix a flat tire, you patch the hole so it holds air again. When a technician fixes your computer, they solve whatever was making it malfunction. This kind of fixing requires figuring out what went wrong and making it work properly again.
- To attach something firmly in place. You might fix a poster to your wall with tape, or fix a shelf to the wall with screws. Scientists fix specimens to microscope slides so they won't move during observation. When something is fixed in position, it stays put.
- To arrange or prepare something. You might fix dinner for your family or fix your hair before school. In this sense, fix means to get something ready or put it in order.
- To establish or set something definitely. A judge might fix a court date, or a teacher might fix the deadline for a project. Once something is fixed this way, it's decided and settled.
The word can also mean to secretly arrange the outcome of something, like fixing a competition so a particular person wins when they shouldn't. This dishonest meaning connects to cheating, where someone manipulates results instead of letting things happen fairly.
