fixed
Repaired so it works or is correct again.
The word fixed has several related meanings:
When something is fixed, it means it has been repaired or corrected. If your bicycle chain falls off and your dad fixes it, the bike works again. When you fix a mistake in your homework, you make it right. A broken window gets fixed when someone replaces the glass.
Fixed also means attached firmly in place so it won't move. A fixed ladder is bolted to the side of a building, unlike a movable one you carry around. Ships navigate using the North Star because it appears fixed in the sky while other stars seem to rotate. When something is fixed in position, it stays put.
The word can also mean set or unchanging. A fixed price means the cost won't change through negotiation. Your school probably has a fixed schedule, with classes starting at the same time each day. Scientists use fixed amounts of ingredients in experiments so they can repeat their results.
In sports or games, fixed has a darker meaning: when a competition is fixed, someone has cheated by arranging the outcome beforehand. A fixed boxing match isn't a real contest because the fighters agreed ahead of time on who would win.
