flagon
A large old-fashioned jug used for serving drinks.
A flagon is a large container for holding liquids, especially drinks like wine, cider, or ale. Picture a big jug with a handle and a narrow neck, often made of pottery, metal, or glass. In medieval times, servants would carry flagons to the dinner table to refill people's cups during feasts.
Flagons show up often in historical novels and fantasy stories set in older time periods. When characters gather at a tavern in The Lord of the Rings, they might order a flagon of mead. Pirates in adventure stories might pass around a flagon on their ship.
The word itself sounds old-fashioned because we don't use flagons much anymore. Today we're more likely to see pitchers, bottles, or carafes. But flagons remain popular at Renaissance fairs and medieval-themed restaurants, where people enjoy experiencing how things worked in the past. Some families still use decorative flagons to serve drinks at special dinners, keeping alive a tradition that goes back hundreds of years.
