flagpole
A tall pole used to hold and display a flag.
A flagpole is a tall, straight pole designed to display a flag. You'll find flagpoles outside schools, government buildings, and homes, standing proud and vertical so flags can fly freely in the wind.
Most flagpoles are made of metal, fiberglass, or wood, and they include a rope system (called a halyard) that lets you raise and lower the flag. The rope runs through a pulley at the top, making it possible to send a flag all the way up without climbing. Some flagpoles are short enough to mount on a building's wall, while others tower 50 feet or higher.
The flagpole serves a practical purpose: it lifts the flag high enough to catch the wind and be seen from a distance. When wind blows, the flag extends outward from the pole, displaying its colors and symbols clearly. On calm days, the flag hangs down along the pole's length.
Flagpoles also appear in common expressions. When someone runs something up the flagpole, they're testing an idea to see how others react to it, like raising a flag to see if anyone responds. The phrase comes from the military practice of raising flags as signals.
