fledgling
A young bird, or someone or something new and inexperienced.
A fledgling is a young bird that has just grown its flight feathers and is learning to fly. You might spot a fledgling hopping awkwardly on the ground near its nest, flapping its wings clumsily as it practices the skills it needs to soar. Parent birds often stay nearby, calling encouragement and bringing food while their fledgling figures things out.
This word captures that wobbly, in-between stage when a bird isn't a helpless chick anymore but isn't quite a confident flyer yet.
We also use fledgling to describe anything new and inexperienced. A fledgling business has just opened its doors. A fledgling programmer is learning to write their first real code. A fledgling friendship is just beginning to develop. In each case, the word suggests potential and promise, but also inexperience and vulnerability. Like that young bird testing its wings, a fledgling anything is making its first brave attempts at something difficult, learning from mistakes, and building the skills needed for success.
