floodlight
A very bright light that shines over a wide area.
A floodlight is a powerful lamp that produces an extremely bright, wide beam of light, designed to illuminate large outdoor areas. Unlike a regular lamp that lights up just one room, a floodlight can brighten an entire baseball field, construction site, or building facade.
Stadium floodlights mounted on tall towers let games continue after sunset. Building managers use floodlights to illuminate parking lots at night, helping people feel safe. Theaters and concert venues use floodlights to wash stages with light during performances.
You might notice floodlights in your own neighborhood: those bright lights that click on when someone walks past a house at night are small floodlights with motion sensors. Construction crews use portable floodlights so they can keep working after dark.
The verb form means to illuminate something with floodlights. When a building is floodlit (or floodlighted), powerful beams highlight its architecture. Historic monuments are often floodlit at night to make them stand out against the dark sky, turning ordinary structures into dramatic landmarks that catch people’s attention.
