floor
The flat surface you walk on inside a building.
A floor is the surface you walk on inside a building. Every room has a floor, whether it's made of wood, tile, carpet, concrete, or another material. The floor is what supports your weight and keeps you from falling into the room below.
The word also refers to different levels of a building. The ground floor (or first floor) is at street level, where you walk in from outside. Above that are the second floor, third floor, and so on. When you take an elevator in a tall building, you choose which floor you want to visit.
In debates or meetings, having the floor means it's your turn to speak. When a student raises their hand and the teacher calls on them, that student now has the floor. Everyone else should listen without interrupting until the speaker is finished.
The word can also mean a minimum level or bottom limit. In economics, a price floor sets the minimum amount something can cost. The ocean floor is the bottom of the sea, the lowest solid surface under the water.
